Introducing the 2017 Spirit of Gold Marching Band Show
These dedicated musicians provide the instruction, inspiration, and guidance necessary to make the Spirit of Gold shine.
Director - Jenny Collins
Jenny Collins has been Director of Bands at Goose Creek High School since 2006. Ms. Collins received a Master of Music Education with emphasis in conducting from Wichita State University under the tutelage of Jean Lansing and Dr. Victor Markovich. Ms. Collins earned a Bachelors of Music Education from Morehead State University. While at the University, she studied with Eugene Norden and Dr. Richard Miles. A second Masters in Educational Leadership at Charleston Southern University in progress. While under her direction, the Spirit of Gold band has received many honors, including numerous Superior Ratings and Outstanding Performance Awards.
Assistant Director of Bands - Josh Artz
Josh Artz has been the Assistant Director of Bands at Goose Creek High School since 2014. Mr. Artz graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with concentration in Clarinet Performance. Mr. Artz is an alumni of Goose Creek High School, where he served as the Drum Major of the Spirit of Gold Band.
Marrington Middle School Director - Swati Dadheech-Linder
Mrs. Swati Linder is the director of bands at Marrington Middle School of the Arts. This is Mrs. Linder's tenth year teaching, as well as her tenth year at Marrington. She also serves as an assistant director of bands with Goose Creek High School Band. She lives in Goose Creek with her husband, new son, and dog.
Under the direction of Mrs. Linder, the Marrington Bands have consistently placed students into the Berkeley County All County Band, Region Band, and All-state Band. Her bands have earned Excellent and Superior Ratings at state and regional festivals. As a result of these high awards, the band has been awarded the highest state honor several years in a row, the Outstanding Performance Award.
She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (K-12, Instrumental) from Winthrop University and is highly qualified in all areas of music education. Mrs. Linder's primary instruments are the flute and piccolo. She has performed locally with the Charleston Wind Ensemble, the Summerville Community Orchestra, the Berkeley County Director Big Band, and the Goose Creek Community Band.
Sedgefield Middle School Director - Derek Classey
Originally from Cobb County GA, Derek Classey traveled to Statesboro GA where he received his degree in music education. While there he studied with Dr. William Schmid, and Dr. Robert Dunham and held many leadership positions including Drum Major of the universities marching band for three years. After graduation Mr. Classey moved to Charleston, SC with his now wife Jacqueline, and served as a drum major caption judge for several GA marching band competitions before becoming the Director of Bands at Sedgefield Middle School in Goose Creek SC in late 2012.
Percussion Instructor - James Cannon
James Cannon, Percussion Instructor, received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in percussion performance from Winthrop University. He is the coordinator of the Goose Creek and BCA percussion ensembles. Mr. Cannon is also a part of the South Carolina Artist Roster, Vic Firth Education Team, and he has given master classes and clinics across the state. He also plays drums and vibraphone professionally throughout the state. While under his direction, the GCHS Percussion ensemble has won 3 state championships in the concert percussion division.
Percussion Instructor - Chris Alaniz
Chris Alaniz is a native of Central Illinois. after many years as Percussion Caption head for Danville HS, and working with numerous percussion groups in the area, he moved away to become the Percussion Caption head at Normal West Community HS in Normal Illinois under the direction of Lisa Preston. As a well rounded percussionist and adjudicator, Chris has taught a variety of traditionalensembles and ensembles involved in WGI, CIPA, OIPA, CWEA, MEPA, IMEA, BOA, DCA and DCI. His career has afforded him the opportunity to work in the Midwest to the East Coast, as well as allowing him to work with and be taught by some of the top educators around. John Bixby, Bret Kuhn, Brian Mason, Charlie Poole, and Ralph Hardimon to name a few. As Chris worked his way down to South Carolina he was the assistant to Kurry Seymour Director of Percussion at Coastal Carolina University in Conway SC. Chris went on to be Percussion Caption Head at Ashley Ridge HS. in Summerville SC. As well as being on staff with the 2010(-2015) WGI Gold Medal Palmetto Percussion Independent from Central SC.Chris is currently on staff with River Bluff HS. from Lexington SC. Chris is excited to be working with the Goose Creek HS Percussion section this season. Chris Alaniz is a Vic Firth Educational Artist
Flute Instructor - Kim King
Kimberly Alford King graduated from the College of Charleston with a B.A. in Flute Performance and a B.S. in Biology. She plays flute and piccolo with the Southcoast Symphony and is the found and conductor of the St. Timothy Flute Choir. Kim has a flute studio and enjoys making music with ensembles all over South Carolina. She is a manager at o2si Smart Solutions, a custom analytical standards manufacturer, and has been a volunteer at The Center for Birds of Prey since 2007.
